The
Netherlands America University League of Ann Arbor is a
non-profit organization of people in southeastern Michigan interested
in all aspects of Dutch and Flemish culture.
Many but not all members have some kind of association with the
University of Michigan. Many speak Dutch, many do not, but all share an
interest in the social, cultural, literary, political and scientific
life of the Netherlands and Flemish-speaking Belgium.
The league was founded in 1976 and counts about 100 members in all age-groups.
Typical NAUL events include:
- Dutch brown-bag lunch meetings at the UofM Program for Dutch studies (Thursdays)
- February: Live classical Music, Poetry and Art by NAUL members and friends
- March: Annual Members Meeting and Rijst-tafel (Indonesian-style food)
- April/May: A/V presentation by a NAUL member explaining his/her profession in layman's terms
- June/July: BBQ picnic
- September: Annual Reception
- September/ October: A/V presentation by a NAUL member explaining his/her profession in layman's terms
- October/November: DeVries / Van der Kooy lecture -- co-sponsored by the NAUL and the Program for Dutch studies
- December: Sinterklaas party for kids young and old
